WHAT IS SUP YOGA?

SUP yoga is the latest and greatest yoga practice that takes your class not only outside, but onto the water! SUP Yoga is the practice of yoga on a Stand Up Paddleboard.  It is best done in calmer bodies of water such as an inlet, bay or lake, as opposed to the ocean. This is what make Murrells Inlet and Pawleys Island the perfect paddle spots!  SUP yoga has become increasingly popular over the past few years, with more people wanting to be outdoors and active. While neither paddle boarding nor yoga experience is required, it is a more challenge sport due to the combination of strength, balance and focus that is included in the practice. All levels are welcome to participate, and classes include an introduction to paddle boarding and beginner yoga poses.

Taking your practice outside is excellent for grounding, as well as receiving small doses of Vitamin D from the sun (although don’t forget the sunscreen!)

Think of the last time you were out on the water – did the sound of the waves lull you, the feel of the water beneath you relax you, the warmth of the sun warm you? SUP yoga has all of this benefit and more (especially during savasana, or as we like to say, “seavasana”).

You know how great it feels to work and stretch your muscles in a land yoga class? Just imagine the focus and strength it takes to practice those same moves on an unstable surface, with the wind and current moving around you. The small vibration of the board under the weight of the poses incorporates smaller muscle groups that often get overlooked or unused in traditional  yoga. Challenging? yes. Rewarding? ABSOLUTELY.

Due to practicing on a less solid surface, there is little to no impact on joints. Poses on knees, ankles, shoulders and hips have less pressure due to the give of water beneath the board. The result of this is the ability to hold poses that you may not be able to practice on land, thus increasing the stretch and overall flexibility.

Imagine holding yourself in a high lunge, or headstand even. Now imagine holding that same post on a moving surface! This requires much more core work, intense focus and deep breathwork – all things that will drastically improve your overall balance.

LET'S LOOK AT A FEW OF THE BENEFITS OF PRACTICING YOGA ON A STAND UP PADDLEBOARD

INTERESTED IN A SUP YOGA CLASS?

Here are a few things you should take along.

*If renting a board from Be Soulfish for a class, items 3-6 will be provided for you.

If you prefer to practice SUP yoga on your own (and by own, we mean with  a friend outside of a class – we never recommend paddleboarding alone), here are a few excellent poses to try:

  • Easy Seated or Lotus Pose

  • Child’s Pose

  • Down Dog

  • Crescent Lunge

  • Half Pigeon

  • Boat Pose

  • Savasana

Best Inflatable Paddle Boards for SUP Yoga

The main thing you want to look for when searching for paddle boards that are perfect for yoga are a wide board with plenty of grip on the top of the board. The width will give you more room and sturdiness to practice poses and the grip will prevent wet hands and feet from slipping off the surface. I personally recommend a width of 32′ or more and a length of 10′ long. The length with allow you more room to stretch out, especially if you carry other belongings on board.

iRocker Cruiser 10'6"

iRocker Cruiser
My personal favorite and the board I currently use to teach SUP Yoga classes, is the iRocker Cruiser 10’6″. There is plenty of cargo room thanks to bungee cords in both the front and the back. This lightweight inflatable board is super easy to transport and has a large grip platform. Not to mention that it looks great out on the water 😉

Nautical 10' 6"

Nautical 11' Paddle Board
Another excellent option is the Nautical 10’6″ . At almost half the cost of the iRocker Cruiser, it’s an amazing affordable option with the same great quality and size as the iRocker brand.

FitPulse 11'

FitPulse 11' iSUP
An extremely affordable option from Amazon is the FitPulse 11ft Paddleboard. This is a great board for the value, and comes with everything you need to get out on the water at a great price.
